Ryan Carters (Class 2008) retires from cricket

Posted 12 May, 2017

Ryan says "it's time to hang up my bat and gloves, and start writing a new chapter. Thank you for all the special memories."

Ryan Carters has always marched to a different beat than most professional athletes.

So it was fitting that he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket from high in the mountains in Bali despite being just 26 years old. See more of the Canberra Times article here.

But while Carters impressive career has seen him succeed in many positions on the pitch, it’s his philanthropic ventures off pitch that truly set him apart.

After visiting Nepal and seeing first hand how crushing poverty and lack of access to education affected so many people, Carters founded his charity Batting for Change – which supports the education of disadvantaged women in cricket-playing nations. Through a fun ‘pledge per six’ fundraising model, Batting for change leverages the big-hitting nature of the Big Bash League to raise funds for education through every six the Sydney Sixers hit.

This year, Carters aims to raise $150,000 for the LBW Trust to support the education of more than 600 disadvantaged women in India, Sri Lanka and Kenya.
