Life after Radford with Jo Clay (Class of 1994)

Jo’s advice to current students is – don’t get down in the weeds of life, take it day by day. Exam results will not rule your life. Surround yourself with good friends and really foster those relationships, as they will be important when you are older.

Jo Clay (Class of 1994) shared insight into her Life after Radford. Jo describes herself as an Author, Activist and Entrepreneur.  She is an avid writer and has degrees in Creative Writing and Law.  The knowledge she has acquired, life experiences and her passion for the environment has seen Jo develop The Carbon Diet and recycling company Send and Shred. Jo is currently writing a book about carbon footprints.

Jo’s passion for sustainability and the environment has seen her enter politics, adding that it was something that “she had to do”- determined to make a difference and raise awareness about the environment. Jo said that it has never been easy to decide what she wanted to do in life; she started something and went with it. Jo’s advice is – “don’t worry about making the wrong choice, worry about making no choice at all. Life is all about experiences”.

Whilst at Radford, Jo described herself as not an overly “outdoorsy” type of person but shared that her experience at Year 9 camp provided her with valuable life lessons and she learnt a lot about resilience, these were sentiments shared by another student when I reviewed the Radfordian published in 1991. Jo’s passion for writing stemmed from the English programs that Radford offered as well as the support from the teachers, notably Mr H and Mr J Foulcher.

Jo has kept her Radford friendships and made mention of fellow Collegian, Renee Dockrill (Class of 1994) who Jo says is her best mate and a woman that she admires most. Jo added that Renee is a great businesswoman and that she has enjoyed watching and learning from Renee over the years.

Jo’s advice to current students is – don’t get down in the weeds of life, take it day by day. Exam results will not rule your life. Surround yourself with good friends and really foster those relationships, as they will be important when you are older.
