Posted 26 Mar, 2026

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of Radford Collegian Ashley Fernandez (Class of 2020), an emerging force in Australian rugby whose journey from school sport to the international stage is nothing short of inspiring.

Ashley began her rugby career at Radford College, where her passion for the game first took shape. From those early days, she has demonstrated a strong work ethic, resilience and determination that have propelled her through the ranks of elite rugby.

Ashley went on to play for the Canberra Royals in the local competition before earning selection with the Uni-North Owls, where her performances quickly caught attention. Her continued development led to her selection in the ACT Brumbies, marking a significant milestone in her representative career.

Sporting excellence runs in the family, with Ashley’s father, Jaime Fernandez, a three-time Olympian and silver medallist in rowing at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. This legacy of dedication and high performance is clearly reflected in Ashley’s own journey.

Despite facing setbacks, including injuries during her Super Rugby Women’s campaign, Ashley’s perseverance has been a defining feature of her career. In 2024, she was named in the Wallaroos extended squad, a testament to her talent and determination. She went on to be selected in the Wallaroos’ Pacific Four Series squad and travelled internationally to Ireland, Wales and South Africa for the WXV 2 campaign.

Ashley made her Wallaroos debut against Fijiana in Suva, an incredible achievement and proud moment for both her and the Radford community. She later represented Australia on the world stage at the 2025 Rugby World Cup, further cementing her place among the country’s top players.

Off the field, Ashley is equally committed to making a difference. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education and works as a learning support worker, reflecting her passion for supporting and empowering young people.

Ashley’s journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved through dedication, resilience and a willingness to embrace opportunity. We look forward to following her continued success and are proud to call her a member of the Radford Collegians community.
